Fieldwork Conducted to Explore Potential for Oil and Natural Gas in Kalaw Basin

A ceremony to encourage the joint teams undertaking the initial preliminary exploration fieldwork to identify potential locations for oil and natural gas accumulation within the Kalaw Basin was held on 26 May at the Ministry of Energy's Yadanar Hall. The ceremony was attended by the Union Minister, Deputy Minister, directors-general, the Professor (Head of Department) from the Geology Department of Yangon University, faculty members, students, and geologists from the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.

Of the 14 inland sedimentary basins in Myanmar, nine have not yet been properly explored, extracted, or produced for oil and natural gas. Field studies are now commencing in one of these, the Kalaw Basin. To facilitate these field operations, an "Energy Sector Human Resources Development Committee" has been formed and it comprises of various fields, promoting collaboration in the form of a "University - Industry - Research & Development Tripartite Collaboration". Previously, aerial photographs were used to study structural geology when exploring inland oil fields. Now, with the advancement of Remote Sensing technology, satellite imagery can be used, which can assist in the search for oil and natural gas and make it easier to carry out, reports say.
