Lahu People Celebrates 41st Collective New Year Festival in Keng Tung Township

In line with the traditional customs and practices of the Lahu ethnic people, the 41st Collective New Year Festival was celebrated on 1 February 2025 in Katzin village of the Mongzin village tract of Keng Tung Township. Officials of Triangle Region Command, departmental personnel, civil society organizations, local ethnic people and invited guests attended the event.

          During the New Year celebration, Lahu ethnic people gave the guests with New Year presents. They also celebrated the ritual hand washing event and performed the traditional cultural dance accompanied by traditional songs. In return, the guests presented cash in honour to Lahu people and joined the popular round dance on the ground with traditional gourd flutes.

          The Lahu ethnic people performed the popular dance on the ground accompanied by traditional flutes, encircling a small pine tree. During the celebration, they organized ritual hand washing event to seek forgiveness from the elders for their sins physically, verbally and mentally and to rinse the sins. Lahu ethnic people are dispersed in China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Most of Lahu people resides in Shan State (East) and Shan State (North). To date, there are approximately 30 distinct Lahu subgroups, it is reported.
