Myanmar National Human Rights Commission’s Statement 1/2025

         The State Administration Council has pardoned prisoners and detainees serving sentences in respective prisons, jails, and camps across the country in honor of the 77th Independence Day, which falls on January 4. Thus, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission announced on January 5 that it was delighted to share the joy with the pardoned prisoners and their families.

Statement

1.       In commemoration of the 77th Anniversary of Independence Day, which falls on 4 January 2025, the State Administration Council issued State Administration Council Order 1/2025, which granted remission of one-sixth of the remaining sentences to be served, for prisoners incarcerated in respective prisons, jails, and camps under existing laws; Order 2/2025, a total of 5,864 prisoners serving sentences in respective prisons, jails, and camps were conditionally pardoned; Order 3/2025, commuted the life sentences of 144 prisoners in respective prisons and jails to the 15-year imprisonment, and Order 4/2025, 180 foreign prisoners from the respective prisons has remitted and deported. The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission welcomes these acts of clemency.

2. These actions reflect the positive step in terms of human rights, and it is expected that the released prisoners will be able to participate in some way in establishing a State based on democracy and a federal system. The granting of remission and deportation of foreign prisoners is also viewed as a step to promote friendly relations between nations.

3. The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission is delighted to share the joy with the relevant family members of those who have been released and hopes that similar positive human rights and humanitarian actions will continue to be carried out.
