In order to facilitate the increased export of agricultural products of Myanmar, the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Agreements (MoAs) on the establishment of new jetties for loading and unloading processes of crops and oil products at Wharf Nos 27, 28 and 29 of the Thilawa Port Terminal, and installation of sheltered conveying systems at Sule Jetty and Warehouses 1, 2, 3 and 4, held at Novotel Yangon Max Hotel in Yangon on 2nd January. The event was attended by State Administration Council Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo, in his capacity as the Chairman of Central Committee on Ensuring Smooth Flow of Trade and Goods, who delivered opening remarks.
Also present were the Yangon Region Chief Minister, Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications, Yangon Region Government ministers, permanent-secretary and departmental heads of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and concerned officials from Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF), Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association (MPBMSMA), Myanmar Edible Oil Dealers Association and related companies, Myanmar China Harbour Engineering (MCHEC), and invited guests.
During the ceremony, the Union Minister highlighted the following points:
- The rice export volume in the 2023- 2024 financial year (FY) was only 1.7 million tonnes at Yangon Port, the volume reached 2.1 million tonnes during nine months period between April and December in the 2024-2025 FY.
- The maize export was only 1.3 million tonnes in previous FY, and it increased to 1.6 million during nine months of this financial year. Therefore, the need of jetties become high and modern equipment should be installed to promote the productivity.
- In order to implement the guidance to double the export volume given by the Head of the State, the expansion of jetties and modern port machinery can ensure the readiness to manage the increasing trade volume. Therefore, it should work hard to cooperate in four projects successfully and enhance the government-to-business (G2B) and business-to-business (B2B) cooperation.
At the event, MoAs were inked for the construction of an edible oil jetty at Thilawa Wharf 27, the construction of a crop jetty at Wharf 28, a crop jetty at Wharf 29, and the installation of sheltered conveying systems at Sule Warehouses 1, 2, 3, 4 and jetties. The projects’ initial investment totals US$61 million, it is reported.
