Myanmar National Human Rights Commission issued a statement on 35th Anniversary of World’s Children’s Day which falls on 20 November 2024 that it urged all responsible parties to work together to ensure that all children equally enjoy the rights and to listen to the voices of children and fulfill their needs for a safe and prosperous future.
Statement
1. Children are the treasures of the nation. In order to promote and protect the inherent rights of children, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on 20 November 1989 and designated it as World Children’s Day. This year marks the 35th anniversary of this landmark event. The theme of World Children’s Day 2024 is “Listen to the Future”.
2. To promote and protect children’s rights, Myanmar ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991 and enacted the Child Law in 1993. To better protect children, the Child Law 1993 was replaced by the Child Rights Law 2019.
3. Children are human resources for the nation’s future, so it is important for them to grow up healthy, happy, and free from an early age. The comprehensive development of children is tied to a nation’s growth and progress. Therefore, children’s rights must be constantly promoted and protected.
4. Children worldwide face challenges such as poverty, conflict, lack of access to education, and discrimination. Efforts to reduce violence and sexual and psychological exploitation of children cannot be carried out by government agencies alone, but require the participation of civil society organizations, parents, and the public at large.
5. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of World Children’s Day, which falls on 20 November 2024, we urge all responsible parties to work together to ensure that all children equally enjoy the right to life, development, protection, and participation in society. It is imperative to listen to the voices of children and fulfill their needs for a safe and prosperous future.
