Sitagu Sayadaw and Well-Wishers Donate Cash to Funds for Relief and Rehabilitation Measures in Flood-hit Areas

State Ovadacariya Shwegyin Nikaya Chairman Ganidhipati 16th Shwegyin Sangharaja Chancellor of Sitagu International Buddhist Academies and Sitagu Hospitals Abhidhaja Maharatthaguru Abhidhaja Aggamaha Saddhammajotika Mahadhammakathika Bahujanahitadhara Sitagu Sayadaw Dr. Bhaddanta Nyanissara and well-wishers donated cash to the funds for rescue, relief and rehabilitation tasks in the flood-hit areas triggered by Typhoon Yagi at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture in Nay Pyi Taw on 24 September. At the ceremony, a disciple on behalf of Sitagu Sayadaw presented US$10,000 and Kun Kho Ya Co. Ltd., donated K100 million to State Administration Council Vice-Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win, who is in the capacity of the National Disaster Management Committee Chairman.

Then, the Vice-Senior General spoke words of thanks for cash donations as follows:

  • Floods were caused by Typhoon Yagi and heavy rains hit 54 townships in nine regions and states, submerging buildings and schools.
  • More than 140,000 people experienced the impacts of flash floods, leaving 419 people dead until 24 September. The flood destroyed 253 schools and 926 roads and bridges, in addition to lamp-posts and telecom towers, as well as more than 750,000 acres of paddy plantations and killing more than 100,000 animals.
  • The government allocated K30 billion for relief and rehabilitation measures for flood-affected people and regions.
  • On 21 September, Well-wishers donated Ks- 32.2 billion at a cash donation ceremony held on 21 September and the government has accepted the cash donations.
  • Measures are being taken to reopen schools which were closed in floods-hit areas as soon as possible in accordance with the guidance of the Prime Minister while damaged school building are being repaired.
  • After being hit by Cyclone Mocha last year, floods water entered into Bagan ancient cultural zone. As a result, steps were taken to make water flow quickly and greening tasks in accordance with the guidance of the Head of State by dredging ancient lakes and facilitating drainage systems. As a result, less damage was reported at the ancient cultural zone in the rainy season.
  • The SAC would like to special express thanks for donations of US$- 10,000 by Sitagu Sayadaw and Ks-100 million by Kun Kho Ya Company’s family for victims in floods-hit areas. Floods victims and monks and public will recite Sadu happily.

The ceremony was graced by venerable Sayadaws led by Sitagu Sayadaw Dr. Bhaddanta Nyanissara. Present were Chairman of National Natural Disaster Management Committee Vice-Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win, vice chairmen of the committee, union ministers, deputy ministers, departmental heads, well-wishers and officials.
