Union Minister U Khin Maung Yi Attends 2nd ASEAN-Mekong River Commission Water Security Dialogue

The Myanmar delegation, led by Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi attended the second ASEAN-Mekong River Commission Water Security Dialogue to be held in Vientiane, Laos on 18 September. During the dialogue:

• Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR Mr. Saleumaxy Kommasith delivered an opening remark. The attendees made discussions on water sufficiency in Mekong and ASEAN region, to be resilient to environmental impacts, implementation for effective and creative Policy formulation for promoting cooperation in ASEAN region.
• In the afternoon, the Myanmar delegation met with the Thailand delegation led by Dr. Surasri Kidtimonton, Secretary-General of the Thai National Mekong Committee and cordially discussed the conducting public awareness at Myanmar and Thai border areas, release of early flood warnings, water management cases and cooperation in watersheds prevention sector.
• In a sperate meeting with the Union Minister of Natural Resources and Environment from Lao PDR, they discussed the working processes on reducing of dust pollution and future plans.
• Union Minister also met with the Brunei Development Minister H.E. Mr. Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mu­hammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid, and openly exchanged views on the situation in which Myanmar can sign as a member in establishing ASEAN Climate Change Centre (ACCC) in Brunei.

The dialogue was attended by national level representatives from ASEAN countries, water resources and environmental ministers, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, senior officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, Mekong River Delta Commission Chairman, Chief Executive Officer of Mekong River Commission and Senior Officers, water management experts from China, Canada, Australia, Swit­zerland, New Zealand and the US, reports say.
