The World Health Organization declared Mpox disease as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on 14 August 2024. Therefore, the Ministry of Health has been conducting the acceleration of monitoring the disease at public areas including international airports, ports and border crossings, providing quarantine facilities and vaccination, arranging medicines and medical supplies, and conducting public awareness programmes. In this regard:
- On 26 August, health workers from Yangon Region Public Health Department have been conducting preventive measures for Mpox disease at the arrival of the Yangon International Airport since 21 August.
- On 27 August, under the guidance of Mon State Government, health workers from Public Health Department and members of the social welfare associations have been conducting preventive measures for Mpox such as mass thermal screening, an inspection of the health declaration form of arrivals and awareness on Mpox for travellers arriving from abroad at the Mawlamyine Airport.
From 21 to 27 August, 9,450 travellers arriving from abroad have been monitored. No suspected cases have been identified so far. However, preparations are in place to transfer any suspected patients to Waibargi Hospital for further care if necessary, it is reported.
