Rehabilitation Tasks and Clean-up Activities in Loikaw City Continue

KNPP, KNDF and PDF ter­rorists have committed various terrorist acts in Loikaw and nearby areas in order to undermine the administrative mechanism of the Kayah State government, taking cover of residential buildings and reli­gious, health and education ed­ifices starting December 2021. A series of rehabilitation tasks has been carried out in the aftermath of terrorist attacks as follows:

  • Terrorists fired at ethnic people attending the opening ceremony of the archway to mark the 71st Kayah State Day on 15 Janu­ary 2023, causing fatalities of some residents.
  • On 13 November 2023, terrorists intentionally opened fire with small arms and heavy weapons on Loikaw University and abducted some educational staff and students.
  • On 26 January 2024, terrorists with massive force attacking headquarters and outposts of security forces in Moebye, Pek­hon, Loikaw and Demawhso town­ships. They also: ab­ducted and killed residents; set fire to residential houses and markets; blew up the government offices and opened fire on security personnel after positioning themselves in houses, departmental buildings and education as well as health facilities.
  • Since 29 January 2024, security forces launched counter-terrorism operation phase by phase in terrorists’-controlled areas and regained control of the 42-mile Hsi­hseng-Loikaw route on 29 May.
  • On 14 June 2024, security personnel carried out mine-clearance activities in the towns and villages destroyed by terrorists, and also undertook rehabilitation tasks for locals.  
  • Since 16 June, the Tatmadaw military columns took security measures in remaining areas such as Narnattaw, Naungya (A), Naungya (B)  and Tayh­gnalya wards, Taunggwe Pagoda, St Martin Church, cultural muse­um, GTI, government avenue, state ministries and important buildings, and Loikaw Airport. On 11 July, the whole campus of Loikaw University was cleaned up, and some schools were reopened in Loikaw.
  • On 4 July, terrorists shelled Loikaw with the use of heavy weapons and the shells landed in Lawdhamma, Nambawwam, Ywadanshay and Kyauktaung wards, killing one civilian and injuring 10 residents including four children.
  • On 13 July, Kayah State Chief Minister, Commander of Eastern Command and other offcials encouraged rehabilitation tasks and collective clean-up in Loikaw and vicinity with the participation of residents, the Tatmadaw members, MPF members and departmental staff.

At present, local ethnic people have resettled in the Loikaw region becomes has is peaceful and stable and the situation has returned to normality because of concerted efforts of the Government and the Tatmadaw. Officials have managed necessary rehabilitation for residents and fulfilled their needs, reports say.
