The opening ceremony of Bago River Bridge (Thanlyin Bridge No 3) in Yangon Region was held on 8 June. It was inaugurated by Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Present at the were SAC Joint Secretary Lt-Gen Ye Win Oo, SAC members Admiral Tin Aung San, Lt-Gen Nyo Saw, Mahn Nyein Maung, Khun San Lwin, union ministers, the Yangon Region chief minister, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and other officials.
During the ceremony, the Senior General was briefed by Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant about the bridge construction project. Then, Mr. Togo of Nippon Koei Company presented the documents related to the project to Director General U Kyaw Kaung Cho of Bridges Department of Construction Ministry. Afterwards, The Union Minister for Construction presented a gift in commemoration of the ceremony to the Senior General.
In his speech, the Senior General said the following points,
- The bridge is a beautiful cable-stayed bridge which is constructed with a unique design that will be a landmark of Yangon.
- Political situations delayed bridge construction tasks and loan plans in 2021. As there appeared inadequacy in fund provision, the Government had contributed over Ks-46 billion to complete the project.
- Yangon is a major capital city for economic development of Myanmar. Due to the increase of population, together with the local economic development, there occurs heavy traffic on a daily basis.
- The newly-inaugurated Thanlyin Bridge 3 will help ease traffic junctions on the Thanlyin Bridge (1). Thanks to Thilawa SEZ, it will achieve domestic and foreign businesses growth that will lead to development of socio-economic status of residents in Yangon and Yangon South District including Thanlyin, Kyauktan, Khayan and Thonegwa Townships.
- The use of East-West economic corridor will allow travelling to Hpa-an Myawady that contribute the development of Mon and Kayin States as well as development of connectivity with regional countries.
Then, the Senior General and party passed over the bridge, inspected the completion of the bridge, and gave necessary instructions to the reports of the officials.
The bridge construction project has been implemented phase by phase under the agreement between the Japan International Cooperation Agency of Japan, Ministry of Planning and Finance, Ministry of Construction and other relevant ministries of Myanmar. The four-lane bridge is 8,638 feet long including a 6,663 foot-long bridge section and 1975-foot long approach section. It has 75-foot width with a five-foot wide safe zone on each side. Its water clearance is 43 feet high and 735 feet wide. The bridge was built as a cable-stayed bridge made with steel box and PC box with 75-tonne withstanding.
