Central Committee on Drug Abuse Control Holds 1/2024 Meeting

The 1/2024 central committee meeting was held at the Myanmar Police Force Headquarters in Nay Pyi Taw on 14 March.

Also present at the meeting were State Administration Council Member Union Minister for Home Affairs Chairman of the Central Committee on Drug Abuse Control Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, Vice-Chairmans: Ministry of Border Affairs, Union Minister Lieutenant General Tun Tun Naung and Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Joint Secretary and commander of Anti-narcotics police forces and officials, representatives from related ministries. Chairman of the Regional/State Drug Prevention and Control Organization: vice-chairman, secretary and officials attended via video conference.

Chairman of the Central Committee on Drug Abuse Control Lt-Gen Yar Pyae addressed the following points:

  • Drugs are a grave threat to all humankind of the world, and the drug transitions are related to arms smuggling, violence, money laundering and transnational crimes and also affect the regional stability and the rule of law measures.
  • The insurgent groups attempted to stir up unrest in the country and conducted drug production and transport.
  • They also imported the drugs using various ways as the precursor and related materials cannot be produced in the country.
  • The government is accelerating its momentum, aiming to develop the country and fighting against drugs as a national task.
  • The launching of 39 operations to combat the drugs from 2013 to 2023 and now Operation 39/2024 (2024) in 2024 across the nation as the man-made drug (synthetic drug) is the main threat in the world.
  • The close cooperation with UN, neighbouring countries, ASEAN states, Mekong regions, BIMSTEC members, and international organizations in addition to Yangon-based UNODC, AFP, DEA, NNCC and ONCB to carry out anti-narcotics activities.
  • The 2017 report released by the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, headed by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, stated that the ethnic armed group AA was involved in drug trafficking.
  • Moreover, AA members were found in the drug trafficking groups, and it was found out about eight times. The drug seizures from AA were announced only in the country, and they should be announced internationally through the anti-narcotics partner countries and embassies.
  • While the government is accelerating its anti-narcotics operations, some EAOs and PDF groups in Myanmar have taken advantage of the current political instability and they have been found to be related to the production and transportation of narcotics.
  • It was also found that they are doing actions that affect national security, buying weapons/ ammunitions and supplying equipment with money obtained from drug trafficking.

Then, he concluded the meeting after hearing the presentations of the vice-chairs, joint secretary of the central committee and other attendees, it is reported.
