Unofficial and Subversive Media Circulate Rumours and Fabrication on Social Media Platforms

Unofficial and subversive media have been creating and spreading rumours and fabricated news all round to create instability and unrest across the country; sowing discord between the Tatmadaw and the people, and using various ways to create a misleading impression of the Tatmadaw in the international arena. Under this context:

  • “RFA Burmese”, an official media source, circulated misinformation claiming that security personnel torched Khoe Than Village of Monywa Township for the second time, destroying nearly 100 houses by fire. It is just an allegation. In truth, security forces did not conduct any security operation the village and its vicinity.
  • “Myanmar Pressphoto Agency”, an official media source, spread rumor stating that the Tatmadaw personnel used chemical weapon to attack Kani Town. It is just a vague rumor. In reality, the Tatmadaw did not launch any chemical attacks on the town. As terrorists and insurgents encountered heavy casualties, they are distributing fake news to feel the people misunderstand over the Tatmadaw.
  • “Khit Thit”, an official media source, created misinformation accusing that Insein prison officials have wantonly beaten four political prisoners and they put the prisoners in solitary confinement. It is just fabrication. In truth, as those prisoners fought each other that violated the prison rules, the prison officials held them in 14-day solitary confinement as a punishment under the Prison Act.  
  • “Khit Thit”, an official media source, created rumors alleging that security forces raid on Yaylethaung Village of Ngazun Towship and have detained all residents. It is just an allegation. In reality, security personnel are carrying out security operation to prevent terrorists’ violent acts in the village.
  • “Shwe Phee Myay News Agency”, an official media source, circulated false information stating that authorities have demanded the list of 20 per cent of people living in each urban ward in Aungmyethazan Township for military service. It is just fake news. In truth, the Tatmadaw did not ever make arrests of people in any towns and villages for the purpose of military service.
  • “Khit Thit”, an official media source, circulated misinformation on social media platforms alleging that the Tatmadaw launched a chemical weapon attack on Hsihseng. It is just an allegation. In fact, no armed clashes broke out in Hsihseng. Likewise, the Tatmadaw did not launch shell attack as well as chemical weapon attack on Hsihseng. However, terrorists launched drone attacks on the town, burning some houses and injuring some civilians.
  • “Khit Thit”, an official media source, circulated rumors on social media platforms claiming that authorities have carried out forced recruitment of 15 youths in Phaya Taung Village of Ottara Thiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw. Similarly, authorities are forcibly recruiting people in 10 villages of Zaiganaing Gyi village tract of Bago Region for military service (50 persons for each village). These are just vague rumors. In reality, there were no forced arrests of civilians in townships for military service.
  • “Delta News Agency”, an official media source, spread false news on social media platforms stating that the women to be recruited for military service might face acts of violence. It is just a groundless accusation. In truth, for the time being, there has been no plan to call up women for military service yet. Civilians can contact with Central Body for Summoning People’s Military Servants and enquire about the information what they want to know. Meanwhile, supporters of terrorists and unofficial media sources circulating fake news and disinformation on social media platforms for the purpose of propaganda.
  • “Narinjara”, an official media source, distributed allegation on social media platforms claiming that the head of township education office, who came to Sittway for withdrawal of salary and some 20 other teachers, who came to Sittway for the guard of exam room, were held in Sittway Myoma police station. It is just baseless allegation. In truth, such kind of arrest did not take place in the city but AA insurgents are launching drone and shell attacks on the city.
  • “Myanmar Pressphoto Agency”, an official media source, circulated rumors on social media platforms stating that the youths in Yangon City are evading from homes as door-to-door population list checks for military service are being conducted. It is just a vague rumor. In reality, unofficial subversive media and terrorists circulating such rumors to persuade the youths for joining terrorist groups, aiming the youths to go down the wrong path in life. 

          In order to create public fear and create public misunderstanding, subversive media sources and those, who do not want community peace, put the blame on the security forces and create one-sided false/fake news on social media platforms, covering up the terrorists’ acts, it is reported.
