Project to Boost Production of Indigenous Chicken Launches: Advancing Indigenous Chicken Species and Disease Management under Mekong-Luncang Cooperation Special Fund 2023

A ceremony was held at the Veterinary Science University in Nay Pyi Taw Yazin on 8 March to introduce the Project of Boosting Production Native Chicken and to hold the workshop on Genetic Improvement of Indigenous Chicken Species and Disease Exposure. The occasion was attended by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung, deputy ministers, the permanent secretary, directors-general, professors, analysts, departmental officials, breeders of native chicken breeding business.

According to the 2023 Animal Survey, there are over 41.40 million chickens in Myanmar. However, due to a growing market demand for growing population, breeding of indigenous chicken become required. The Veterinary Science University will spearhead efforts to genetically improve native chicken species and increase production by exposing them to infectious diseases under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2023).

The project aims to develop indigenous chicken breeds with faster growth rates and superior taste, while implementing preventive measures against common chicken diseases. Additionally, research will focus on conserving native chicken species including Inbinwa and Chittagon. This initiative not only benefits undergraduate students through practical learning opportunities but also provides thesis avenues for postgraduate students, it is reproted.
