Vice-Chairman of State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win Attends Work Coordination Meeting on Literacy for People from Rural Regions and Ethnic Areas

Vice-Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Education, Health and Human Resources Development Committee, attended the Work Coordination Meeting on Literacy for People from Rural Regions and Ethnic Areas which was held at the meeting hall of the SAC Chairman Office in Nay Pyi Taw on 19 September, and delivered speech.

Present together with the SAC Vice-Chairman Vice-Senior General were union ministers, Union Civil Service Board chair, deputy ministers, permanent-secretaries, directors-general, and officials.

At the meeting, the Chairman of the Education, Health and Human Resources Development Committee the SAC Vice-Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win delivered a speech as follows:

  • As the literacy and school education of the ethnic people including rural residents were weak, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister instructed the Committee to conduct a basic literacy campaign for them at the Union Government meeting (4/2023) which was held on 30 August.
  • In line with the theme of the 57th International Literacy Day 2023: “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies”, literacy brings benefits to individuals as well as contributions to development of social, economic, political and cultural sectors of the regions and the country.
  • The terrorist acts happening in some townships and border areas of the country depend on consequences of 4.1 million illiterates above 15 years old people according to the 2019 interim population.
  • Not only the Ministry of Education but all the ministries, region and state governments need to work together to ensure promotion of literacy on a basis of the entire country, and to take educational measures in order that the people will be aware of the importance of literacy.

Then, Union Ministers and the members of the Education, Health and Human Resources Development Committee reported on plans to implement the basic literacy campaign for people from rural regions and ethnic areas by the ministries and suggestions.

The SAC Vice-Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win made coordination on the discussions and suggestions and gave concluding remarks, following the meeting ended.
