Myanmar Delegation Attends 30th Anniversary of the Mekong MoU on Drug Control and 14th Ministerial Meeting of the Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding on Drug Control

Four Myanmar delegates, headed by Lt-Gen Ni Lin Aung, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Chief of Myanmar Police Force CCDAC Secretary attended the 30th Anniversary of the Mekong MoU on Drug Control which was held in Beijing, China, on 5-6 September, and the 14th Ministerial Meeting of the Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding on Drug Control.

In the evening of 4 September, Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister Chief of Myanmar Police Force held bilateral talks with a delegation led by Mr. Xu Datong, Vice-Minister of Public Security of China. During the talks, both sides frankly discussed on enhancing information sharing and collaboration to combat drug trafficking, border precursor control, telecommunications fraud, and human trafficking.

On 6 September, the 14th Ministerial Meeting of the Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding on Drug Control in the Greater Mekong Subregion, where leaders from Mekong regions and UNODC were present.

During this meeting, the leader of the Myanmar’s delegation addressed as follows:

  • Myanmar has been implementing five priority areas of the national drug control policy such as Supply Reduction and Alternative Development, Demand and Harm Reduction, International Cooperation, Research and Analysis, and Compliance with Human Rights.
  • Myanmar has been conducting special operations on drug control measures annually.
  • It also carry out the sustainable opium crop substitution development to reduce the opium cultivation in Shan State.
  • Myanmar makes all-round efforts to combat narcotic drugs as a national task.  

After the meeting, delegates visited booths commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Mekong MoU on Drug Control displayed by Mekong regions. In the evening, they attended a dinner hosted by Mr. Wang Xiaohong, Chinese People’s Security Minister.

Myanmar delegation arrived back in Yangon from Beijing, China, on 8 September by air, it is reported.
