Unofficial and Subversive Media Circulate Rumours and Fabrication on Social Media Platforms

Unofficial and subversive media have been creating and spreading rumours and fabricated news all round to create instability and unrest across the country; sowing discord between the Tatmadaw and the people, and using various ways to create a misleading impression of the Tatmadaw in the international arena. Under this context:

  • “Khit Thit”, an unofficial media, alleged that political prisoners in Thayawady Prison have been forced to work hard labor and they have to pay money from 500,000 kyats to 1,000,000 kyats unless they do not want to do so. It is just an allegation. In reality, there have been no political prisoners in the said-prison but there have been prisoners sentenced for their violations of any existing laws. In the prison, no forced hard labor can be found but they are assigned compulsory tasks of cleaning, cooking and gardening under the prison law.
  • “Khit Thit”, an unofficial media, spread misinformation on social media platforms that combined security personnel raid some villages in Myitche Township, looted valuable belongings and torched the houses. It is absolutely false news. In reality, security personnel, acting on the tip-off about PDF terrorists’ forced collection of money, abduction and killing of local residents in the said-villages, conducted a security operation at the scenes. Meanwhile, PDF terrorists stationed in Phalan-O village opened fire to the security personnel and blasted the village, resulting in burning the houses to the ground.
  • “Khit Thit”, an unofficial media, circulated rumors on social media platforms that the Tatmadaw personnel shelled Sitway, killing 12 civilians and injuring at least 80 others. It is just a vague rumor. In reality, AA insurgents shelled security personnel doing security duty in Sittway military station but the shells landed Korea port (local name) near Myoma market, injuring some local civilians.

With the purpose to make public panic, subversive media abetting terrorists and those who disturb community peace and tranquility are spreading one-sided misinformation on social media platforms that security personnel are forcibly making arrests of people. Again, those media are creating fabrication to make the youths join the terrorist organizations as well as the people feel hatred for the Tatmadaw, it is reported.
