On the 28th of January, an armed engagement erupted as armed PDF terrorists opened fire to security personnel doing security duty near Phaya Mae Pagoda in Dawei Township, located within the Taninthayi Region. Following the armed confrontation, the terrorists infiltrated the premises of the University of Technology (Dawei) and held three members of the educational staff, including a pro-rector Dr. Kyaw Aung, through coercive means. Then, they fled to the north of the university.
The assault by PDF terrorists on educational structures and their faculty members constitutes war crimes under the provisions prescribed in the international law, including the Geneva Conventions. In response, authorities are poised to pursue stringent legal measures against the terrorists under counter-terrorism laws, the penal code, and relevant legislation. Security forces are actively engaged in efforts to swiftly rescue the abducted faculty members, it is reported.
