State Administration Council Information Team Leader Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun’s Further Clarifications on People’s Military Service Law

The Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing publicly explained the matters pertaining to People’s Military Service Law and Reserve Forces Law at the meeting with political parties on 13 February; with ambassadors and chargés d’affaires ad interim serving diplomatic mission abroad on 14 February; and with YMBA members on 17 February.

SAC Information Team leader Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun made further clarifications regarding the said-meetings:

  • People’s Military Service Law has been enacted since the past to safeguard Our Three Main National Courses in addition to national defence. Work will be calculated and deliberated on it.
  • During the meeting with YMBA members, the Prime Minister said that only eligible fair manpower at the ages prescribed in the law are to serve military service but measures will be taken not to burden the State and the people.
  • During the meeting with ambassadors and chargés d’affaires ad interim serving diplomatic mission abroad, the Prime Minister said that all of veterans shall not be summoned to serve the military service duty and those who are required for the country will be given the opportunity to fulfil such duty.
  • The Prime Minister said that the political might, the economic might and the military might shall have to be powerful for state-building as well as for ensuring existence of the state.
  • The Government will justly work in practice to build the required might for the state in addition to the political might, the economic might and the military might. Some EAOs are circulating rumours to make unstable people’s socio-economic status and public panic.
  • Around 13 million citizens are involved in national defence duty under the People’s Military Service Law. Of 13 million, over 6 million men are eligible. Accordingly, 60,000 men, one per cent of 6 million men, will just have to serve national defence duty in rotation.

Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun further explained that citizens who are eligible for national defence duty shall fulfil assigned duty in rotation like in other countries. Once the citizens have fulfilled the national defence duty, priority will be given over them for appointment of service personnel and job employment. For the time being, no plan has been made yet to summon women for people military service under the People’s Military Service law.
