Myanmar Ships about 4,000 Tonnes of Honey to Abroad Yearly

As Myanmar is rich in natural forest resources with the present of healthy honeybee’s species creating tremendous potentials to produce organic honey, 2,000 tonnes of honey for domestic consumption and of 4,000 tonnes of honey for the external markets have been annually produced. The Apiculture Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, and beekeeping businesses in both lowland and highland produces honey yearly and ship it to foreign markets. Beekeepers living in rural areas earn family incomes from making small-scale beekeeping business.

As the production of honey is conducted from some 31 townships in 9 states and regions, the Apiculture Department is carrying out the supervision and services on pollination for 1.5 million acres of crops. 

Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand are the largest producers of honey among ASEAN countries and Myanmar, as an agro-based country, is making an attempt to boost honey production. It is observed that the beekeeping business commenced in 1979 in Myanmar and Myanmar’s honey penetrated the foreign market in 1985.
