Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing Attends Opening Ceremony of Newsprint Factory (Thaboung) of Myanmar Economic Corporation

The Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and party arrived at Newsprint Factory (Thaboung) of Myanmar Economic Coporation in Ayeyawady Region on 12 August, and formally opened the factory.

At the meeting hall of the factory, the Adviser to the SAC Chairman MEC Chairman Lt-Gen Nyo Saw, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, Union Minister for Energy, and Union Minister for Industry presented on the handover of the two factories Advanced Paper Mill (Thaboung) and Newsprint Factory (Thaboung) from Ministry of Industry to MEC, and preparations to resume operations of the newsprint factory respectively.

After hearing the reports, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister instructed the officials as follows:

  • The Advanced Paper Mill (Thaboung) and Newsprint Factory (Thaboung) had to stop operations due to various reasons.
  • The current group of factories will be able to produce newsprint and other types of paper if they can run at full capacity.
  • Increase in the use of online media has weakened the print media.
  • It can be seen that there is a drop in the use of newsprint. As daily newspapers reflect the history of the country, every country still publishes newspapers, demanding newsprint day after day.
  • During the inspection of the halted factory, the quality of the newsprint that had been produced was rather high. The factory will also be able to produce exercise books and text books.
  • If the country can fulfill its paper demand it can reduce a lot of foregin exchange.
  • Therefore, the government is striving for re-operating factories halted for various reasons with the purpose of promoting domestic manufacturing. Efforts are to be made to continue to boost production of this paper mill.

Next, the Union Minister for Industry and the Adviser to the SAC Chairman MEC Chairman cut the ribbon to resume the Newsprint Factory (Thaboung).

Then, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister made the following activities:

  • Launched the gas station at the Thaboung Natural Gas Distribution Camp by switching on the gas pipeline bar at its opening ceremony and inspected the supply of natural gas through a filtration system, pressure regulation system and metering system at the camp;
  • Formally unveiled the signboard for the Newsprint Factory (Thaboung) and presented cash assistance to the personnel who made efforts to resume operation of the factory;
  • Launched the chip preparation plant for operating the Newsprint Factory (Thaboung). He inspected the functioning of the Chip Preparation Plant, Paper Making Plant and Finishing Section;
  • Put his signature on the first-ever produced newsprint as records. The Senior General presented a gift of fruit basket to foreign experts who got involved in the project to resume operation of the plant; and
  • Took a tour round the factory, and had lunch together with the personnel of the Advanced Paper Mill (Thaboung) and the Newsprint Factory (Thaboung).

Before the lunch, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister said as follows:

  • As the saying goes “Books are Our Best Friends”, literature plays a key role in the improvement of life. To study literature, paper is essential to print and publish texts.
  • As our country is rich in raw materials to produce paper, efforts were made to resume operation of the plant for newsprint production.
  • Resuming operation of the Newsprint Factory (Thaboung) has opened a new chapter to the nation’s industry sector.

The resumption of the factory to produce newsprint will meet the paper demand of the country, reducing spending on foreign exchange and creating job opportunities.
