Unofficial and Subversive Media Outlets Spreading Rumours and Fabrication on Social Media Platforms

Unofficial and subversive media outlets have been creating and spreading rumours and fabricated news all round to create instability and unrest across the country, sow discord between the Tatmadaw and the people, and using various ways to misunderstand the Tatmadaw in the international arena.

  • “Myay Latt A Than”, an unofficial media outlet, posted rumours on social media platforms that farmers are afraid of being forced to pay agricultural loans, and those who cannot pay the loans will be prosecuted and arrested in Wethtikan administrative unit. Those rumours are just allegations. The Myanmar Agricultural Development Bank and its branches, in reality, are only collecting arrears of loans through an organizational way. No cases have been opened against those who still have to pay the loans and new loan system is applied after the previous year’s arrears have been paid.
  • “Myay Latt A Than”, an unofficial media outlet, spread a rumour on a social media platform that women political prisoners were abused and not allowed to undergo medical treatment in Obo Prison. In reality, the prison staff members do not commit any personal torture and are making management the prison under the Prison Act and instructions.

Unofficial and subversive media are wilfully spreading such disinformation and fake news on social media platforms in order to give a misleading impression among local people, civil servants, administrative institutions; and create disruption to counter-terrorism operations being conducted by the Tatmadaw together with the people, and disturb the State’s peace and stability, it is reported.
