Union Ministers and Deputy Minister Receive Regional Director Mr. Francis Pio Smith, Asia and Pacific Regional Office of the United Nations Population Fund

Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr. Kan Zaw, Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing, and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Lwin Oo received Mr. Francis Pio Smith, Regional Director, Asia and Pacific Regional Office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Bangkok of Thailand and party, at the respective ministries in Nay Pyi Taw on 19 December. In this regard:

  • During the meeting with Union Minister Dr. Kan Zaw, both sides frankly exchanged views on the matters relating to the ongoing cooperation programmes and the future cooperation between Myanmar and UNFPA.
  • During the meeting with Union Minister U Myint Kyaing, they cordially exchanged views on the ways to continue cooperation between Ministry of Immigration and Population and UNFPA, and UNFPA’s Reproductive Health, youth sector, HIV and AIDS, establishing capacity to respond to the needs of Myanmar’s population and family planning, promotion of population-related work programmes, and ways to be cooperated in further works between the Ministry and UNFPA.
  • During the meeting with Deputy Minister U Lwin Oo, they candidly exchanged views on the matters related to the project areas of UNFPA being carried out in Myanmar, and the possible ways for the Government of Myanmar and UNFPA to cooperate in the future.

The meetings were attended by the officials from the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, directors-general of the Department of Immigration and Population, Mr. Ramanathan Balakrishnan, UNFPA Representative for Myanmar, and high ranking officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
