Union Minister U Than Swe Meets Separately China, Cambodian and Thai Foreign Ministers in Beijing

On the sidelines of the 8th Mekong-Lancang Foreign Ministers’ Meetings held in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, U Than Swe, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, met Mr Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Mr. Parnpree Bahiddha Nukara, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand on 6 and 7 December.

  • During the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, both sides cordially exchanged views on matters pertaining to the acceleration of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries, including bilateral projects such as Kyaukpyu Deep Seaport, China-Myanmar Railway and cross-border electricity distribution networks, closer collaboration between the law enforcement agencies of Myanmar and China for the maintenance of security, peace and stability along the Myanmar-China border areas and total elimination of illegal drugs and human trafficking as well as online scams, enhancement of cooperation in the media sector in controlling misinformation that could impact bilateral relations and closer coordination in the Mekong-Lancang cooperation mechanism as well as other regional and multilateral arenas. Both sides also discussed the possibility of conveying Buddha Tooth Relic for the 5th time to Myanmar at an appropriate time.
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Mr Wang Yi reiterated China’s position of respecting the sovereignty and territory integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of Myanmar as well as support for Myanmar’s development path that suits the country.
  • During the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, they cordially exchanged views and discussed a wide range of topics, including expanding mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation, particularly in tourism, religion and culture, promoting people-to-people exchanges, and rendering mutual support in regional and international arenas.
  • During the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, they discussed matters related to the maintenance of peace, stability and security along the border, promoting people-to-people contacts, the possibility of providing bilateral humanitarian assistance for the people along the border, repatriation of Thai nationals stranded in Myanmar’s north-eastern border areas, promotion of legal rights and protection of Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand as well as closer collaboration in both regional and multilateral arenas including ASEAN.

Also present at the meetings together with the Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers of Foreign Affairs were relevant officials, it is reported.
