Terrorists Create and Spread Disinformation and Fake News in order to Cause Unrest and Misinformation about the Tatmadaw

Destructive media and some media abetting acts of terrorism are spreading disinformation and fake news because they aim to be some misunderstanding of the local people over the Government, the Tatmadaw and concerned administrative bodies; cause unrest in the area; and strike terror into the public.

  • It was the false news on which it is stated that the shell fired by Regional Operations Command (Laukkai) hit a vehicle carrying Internally Displaced Persons-IDPs at Tong Chaing near Laukkai in northern Shan State. In reality, the shell was just fired by armed terrorists.
  • The news about “passers-by become fewer in Yangon due to the news of forced porter” was also a vague rumour. In reality, people make comings and goings in Yangon as usual.
  • It is learnt that the news about the closure of around 1,200 schools in 10 townships of Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Rathedaung, Ponnagyun, Pauktaw, Minbya, Myebon, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U and Sittwe was a vague rumour. In reality, the schools are currently open as usual.
  • The news circulating on social network about a bar to off-campus living of staff in Mawlamyine University were disinformation and fake news, according to the Rector of Mawlamyine University.

The news being intentionally spread on social network pages are disinformation and fake news. It is announced that people need not to believe those fake news and to encourage education for their offsprings.
