Union Ministers Receive IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Ms. Sarah Lou Ysmael Arriola

Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe, Union Minister for International Cooperation U Ko Ko Hlaing, Union Minister for Labour Dr. Pwint San and Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Thet Thet Khine received Ms. Sarah Lou Ysmael Arriola, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific of International Organization for Migration (IOM), at the respective ministries in Nay Pyi Taw on 26 and 27 June.

  • During the courtesy call between Union Minister for Foreign Affairs and IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, they shared their views on the matters pertaining to the support of the IOM to the people of Myanmar in the field of migration, the updates on progress of IOM current work programmes in Myanmar and the cooperation between two sides.
  • During the courtesy call between Union Minister for International Cooperation and IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, they shared their views on the matters pertaining to the cooperation between Myanmar and IOM in the field of migration and future work to be continued of IOM in Myanmar.
  • During the courtesy call between Union Minister for Labour and IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, both sides friendly discussed the matters for signing of a new MoU since the MoU signed in 2018 expired in 2021, points to be included in the Action Plan of the MoU and matters on ongoing cooperation between the Ministry of Labour and the IOM after signing of MoU, further cooperation to be made and assistance to be provided for Myanmar migrant workers.
  • During the courtesy call between Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, they exchanged their views on cooperation by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between IOM and MoSWRR, the government’s preparations for Cyclone Mocha, provision of humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the storm, reception of illegal migrants and victims of human trafficking and their reintegration into the community.

Also present together with the Union ministers at the meeting were deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, directors-general and officials, high ranking officials. The Director-General, IOM Asia-Pacific Regional Director Ms. Sarah Lou Ysmael Arriola was accompanied by IOM Chief of Mission for Myanmar Mr. Dragan Aleksoski and Regional Migration Policy Support Officer Mr Chaoqian Xiong.
