Ceremony to mark World Environment Day 2023 Held

A ceremony to mark the World Environment Day 2023 was held at the Myanmar International Convention Centre-II in Nay Pyi Taw on 5th June which was attended by the Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. During the ceremony, the Senior General said as follows:

  • 5th June was designated as the World Environment Day at UN General Conference held in 1972 to solve the environmental problems collectively by all countries including Myanmar.
  • This year’s theme is “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”.
  • The purposes of this year’s theme is that all countries need to solve sub-sequent problems of plastic pollution caused by global human action and to accelerate the work of solving the plastic pollution problem, and to initiate a circular economy which can minimize the environmental impacts and volume of waste.
  • Plastic is one of the environmentally harmful materials that does not decompose and that is so persistent. It takes a many years for the plastics to disappear.
  • If plastic waste is incinerated, it will release poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, dioxin, and hydrogen cyanide that will contaminate the atmosphere and will be severe harmful to health.
  • Plastics cause pollution in the atmosphere, ground and water of the natural environment and pose danger to animals from both land and water areas throughout the period starting from the manufacturing process to the disposing one.
  • According to “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022” released by the Food and Agriculture Organization-FAO, it mentioned that the volume of water creatures and water resources declined due to extreme capturing of water creatures, water pollution, weak management and other causes.
  • Plastic waste from discarded, lost and unused fishing nets in the oceans become a global challenge.
  • Myanmar participated in the Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in the ASEAN Region and the ASEAN Framework that were adopted in 2019, and cooperates with ASEAN countries in implementing the ASEAN Regional Action Plan for Combating Marine Debris in the ASEAN Member States (2021- 2025).
  • Myanmar adopted six goals for the National Waste Management Strategy and Master Plan for Myanmar (2018-2030), focusing on solving the problems of plastic pollution.
  • Being a member of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, Myanmar conducts the import and export of plastic wastes under the Environmentally Sound Management.
  • Blessed with aboveground natural resources such as wood and bamboo in Myanmar, our country already has favorable conditions to produce single use plastic substitute materials.
  • As part of environmental conservation, our country is able to take a role model in the world in establishing and maintaining forests.
  • We have to try for forest conservation and reforestation by manufacturing various kinds of plastic substitute paper.
  • It need to reduce the use of waste including plastic waste causing environmental pollution as much as possible and encourage the development of domestic MSME businesses which recycle plastic waste.
  • Moreover, an emphasis must be placed on restricting the import of waste from foreign countries in order to avoid unnecessary environmental pollution in local.
  • In accord with the theme “Solutions to Plastic Pollution” of World Environment Day 2023, the global countries including Myanmar must adopt 3Rs—reduce, reuse and recycle plastic products by implementing long-term projects. And this is a way of public cooperation and such efforts are necessary to create a better environment.

Later, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister presented the good environmental management town award to Zabuthiri Township, the good environmental management village award to Maye Ohnbinsu Village of Mawlamyinekyun Township of Ayeyawady Region, the good environmental management factory award to Global Earth Seafood Processing Plant and Cold Storage Facility Global Earth AGRO and AQUA Industry Public Company, through resepective officials.
