Rehabilitation Activities Underway for the Loss and Damage Caused by Cyclonic Storm (MOCHA)

The departmental officials from relevant Ministries as well as relief and rescue task forces organized and sent in advance by the Tatmadaw have been actively carrying out the rescue and rehabilitation activities in the areas where losses and damages occurred in the aftermath of cyclonic storm (MOCHA).

  • From 31 May to 3 June, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister Admiral Tin Aung San inspected the progress of rehabilitation such as repairing the damaged railway stations along the Pyidawtha (Sittwe)-Yaychanpyin railway section, staff housings and buildings of Myanma Railways caused by the storm “Mocha”, the loading and unloading processes of relief items at jetties in Sittwe,  the field healthcare services being provided by medical specialists from public hospital of Sittwe and rice distribution to the storm victims, and the repair of damaged concrete roads, platforms and stone retaining walls along strand road in Sittwe.
  • From 31 May to 4 June, Lt-Gen Phone Myat from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) and officials viewed the repair work of damaged houses due to the storm in the compound of War Veterans’ Housing in Sittwe, the providing of healthcare services by local medical team to the families of war veterans and local people, and distribution of drinking water by using water trucks, in Sittwe, Minbya, MraukU and Buthidaung Stations. They then provided foodstuffs and personnel goods for officers, other ranks and their families, and distributed biryani boxes to the storm victims and relief and rescue teams.
  • From 31 May to 3 June, Lt-Gen Lu Aye, currently in Kyaukpyu, Lt-Gen Aye Win in Buthidaung, Lt-Gen Min Naing in Hakha, Brig-Gen Khin Maung Aye in Matupi and Brig-Gen Kyaw Kyaw Soe in Myaebon, viewed the distribution of drinking water, repair of power lines, providing healthcare services to locals, distribution of relief aids, and school buildings and residential houses, and coordinated with the responsible officials to fulfil the needs.
  • From 31 May to 4 June, the relief and rescue teams, currently in Ponnagyun, Sittwe, Kyaukpyu, Kyauktaw, Rathedaung, Maungtaw and Buthidaung Townships, conducted rehabilitation measures such as clean-up activities of fallen trees and branches at monasteries and schools, and beside the roads, distribution of purified drinking water and foodstuffs, and repair of lamp posts and power cables. Moreover, the mobile medical team carried out healthcare services.
  • Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development has already sent three mobile water purification trucks to Sittwe Township, two other trucks and one to Rathedaung and Minbya Townships respectively. Three mobile water purification trucks, which will arrive soon, will be sent to Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun and Mrauk-U Townships as quick as possible.
  • As the government made arrangements for conducting repair works of the damaged schools due to the storm “Mocha” aiming to reopen the schools in time, all basic education schools in 17 townships of Rakhine State destroyed by the storm “Mocha” were reopened as of 1st June.
  • The Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation also conducted vaccination programmes for 3,158 cattle, 60 pigs in 34 wards/villages and six military units of Kyauktaw, Sittwe, Ponnagyun, Minbya, Pauktaw, Myaebon, Buthidaung and Rathedaung Townships between 21 and 30 May. The department also provided healthcare services to 327 cattle, 67 pigs and 10 goats in order to prevent animal diseases.
  • The Agricultural Mechanization Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation allotted 33 New Holland 50-Horse Power tractors, 33 sets of six ploughshares and 33 blades to Sittwe Township, and there are 19 sets in Rathedaung Township and 14 sets in Sittwe Township for the farmers to grow paddy.
  • A mobile medical unit-MMU including medical staff from the Social Security Board of the Ministry of Labour started rendering medical treatment to locals and insured workers at designated places in Sittwe and its vicinity as of 3rd June.
  • On 4 June, Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung and officials inspected the loading processes of 14 multi-purpose tractors onto Tatmadaw landing crafts leading to Rathedaung Township at Yaychanpyin jetty in Sittwe. They then inspected progress in construction of the temporary Bailey bridge on the road to Mansi Village in Sittwe Township.
  • Special medical teams and emergency response teams that were sent in advance have been providing healthcare services to locals in Rakhine State in the aftermath of the storm “Mocha”, medical treatments were given to 10,610 out-patients and 20,209 in-patients at public hospitals, and 51,337 patients in rural health centres and branches from 16 May to 3 June. Moreover, field healthcare services, provided by special medical teams that were sent in advance, were given to 5,265 patients.
  • Repairing works of four salt prevention embankments damaged by the storm in Rakhine State were conducted in order to complete before monsoon season by using heavy machines as of 21 May, all the repairing works of embankments were fully completed on 2nd June.

Union Ministers, relevant Region/State Chief Ministers, commanders of regional military commands and responsible departmental officials encouraged the said rehabilitation activities collectively conducted by military personnel, members of Myanmar Police Force and Myanmar Fire Brigade, staff from respective ministries and civil societies, and also attended to their needs, it is reported.
