Rehabilitation Activities Underway for the Loss and Damage Caused by Cyclonic Storm (MOCHA)

The departmental officials from relevant Ministries as well as relief and rescue task forces organized and sent in advance by the Tatmadaw are actively carrying out the rescue and rehabilitation activities in the areas where losses and damages occurred in the aftermath of cyclonic storm (MOCHA).

  • On 29 and 30 May, Admiral Tin Aung San, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister, inspected demonstration of using tree cutters, iron cutters and hydraulic cutters. He also inspected public healthcare services and health awareness programs at the regional health unit compound of Mingan ward in Sittwe, and checked the damage and maintenance of the gravel-filled retaining wall, concrete road and platform along the Sittwe strand road, new arrival and distribution of relief supplies to the ports.
  • On 29 and 30 May, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Moe Aung, along with senior military officers, inspected military headquarters and agriculture and livestock works in Sittwe military station and Sittaw military station of Kyaukpyu, captains of naval vessels delivering relief supplies and naval bases. He also comforted and provided supplies to officials, soldiers, and their family members.
  • On 29 and 30 May, Lt-Gen Lu Aye arriving in Kyaukpyu, Lt-Gen Aye Win arriving in Butheedaung and Brig-Gen Aung Thu Oo arriving in Kyauktaw inspected distribution of purified drinking water to the wards and health services given to local people, repair works of schools, monasteries, street light poles and transformers. Then he also coordinated necessary efforts of rehabilitation work.
  • 904 mobile stations of four telecommunication operators in Rakhine State had faced out of service during the storm. Since repair works have been done until 29 May, 793 mobile stations (91%) have been repaired and communication services have resumed.
  • On 30 May, Lt-Gen Phone Myat of Office of Commander-in-Chief (Army) and senior military officers inspected rehabilitation works, supply of purified drinking water and agriculture and livestock works of local units in Sittwe, Minbya, Mrauk-U military stations.
  • On 30 May, relief and rescue teams arrived in Ponnagyun, Sittwe, Kyaukpyu, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Maungdaw and Butheedaung towns carried out clearing activities of fallen trees/branches on both sides of the roads, provided purified drinking water and foods to storm victims. Mobile medical teams are also providing healthcare services to them.
  • Up to 30 May, Ministry of Construction has carried out repair works of nine out of 24 buildings, including healthcare facilities, medical store, offices and staff housings in Sittwe public hospital. Further, it had repaired the Office of Head of Public Health Department, two out of four medical stores and one staff housing out of nine facilities, including lecture rooms, dormitory and family housings.

Union Ministers, relevant Region/State Chief Ministers, commanders of regional military commands and responsible departmental officials encouraged the said-rehabilitation activities collectively conducted by military personnel, members of Myanmar Police Force and Myanmar Fire Brigade, staff from respective ministries and civil societies, and they also attended to their needs, it is reported.
