International Community Delivering Relief Supplies to Myanmar

International organization and countries are delivering relief items and foodstuffs to be used in the relief and rehabilitation activities for the cyclone-hit victims in the areas where damage and loss occurred due to the Cyclone Mocha as follows –

  • Union Minister for Health Dr. Thet Khaing Win discussed the matters pertaining to the cooperation of UNICEF in the relief activities in cyclone-hit areas at the call with UNICEF Deputy Resident Representative to Myanmar Ms Alessandra Dentice on 25 May.
  • Malaysian Airlines plane carrying a total of 16 and a half tonnes of emergency supplies worth about US$53,000 from ASEAN member states arrived at Yangon International Airport on 26 May.
  • Union Minister for Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement Dr Thet Thet Khine met Resident Representative Ms Noriko Takagi of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Myanmar on 26 May and discussed the matters of the provision of solar lamps and other relief items for storm-hit people in Sittway town.

Following ASEAN’s One Response principle, the humanitarian aid provided by ASEAN countries will be facilitated through the ASEAN Disaster Emergency Logistics System for ASEAN-DELSA. The materials, stored in warehouses in Subang of Malaysia and Chainat of Thailand, will be transported by military aircraft of Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia 19 times. The Government is upholding the policy of ‘No one is left behind’ in undertaking the tasks of emergency responses and rehabilitation activities. The relief and rehabilitation activities are collectively carried out with the timely cooperation of Ministries, region/state governments under the guidance of heads of the State, supervision of National Disaster Management Committee and also with the cooperation of international organizations including ASEAN.
