Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing Attends and Delivers an address at Agricultural Capacity Enhancement Meeting

The Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing attended the Agricultural Capacity Enhancement Meeting which was held at the Department of Agricultural Research in Zeyathiri Township of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area on 10 May, and delivered an address as follows:

  • As farming is the main production industry of Myanmar, it was found that the lives of rural people will remarkably improve if the farming industry develops.
  • The country places monsoon paddy on 15 million acres of farmlands. In this year, summer paddy is grown on 1.8 million acres of monsoon paddy fields.
  • If rice could be planted on 4 million acres of the vacant land at an average per acre yield rate of 72.64 baskets, they would produce 289.54 million baskets.
  • If they sold at a per basket price of K 10,000, they would roughly fetch K2,900 billion for 290 million baskets of rice that would contribute to national economic growth.
  • Likewise, if oil crops and other crops can be grown on 4 million acres of land where any crops are not cultivated, it can be beneficial similar to paddy.
  • Moreover, the government is striving for cultivation and production of quality cotton plants. It is necessary to boom in cultivation of paddy in order to ensure clothing sufficiency of the people.
  • An emphasis must be placed on the cultivation of oil crops and the increase of per acre yield. It is necessary to produce healthy oil for consumers.
  • Myanmar’s coffee is also marketable, so efforts must be made for successful cultivation of coffee. Likewise, Myanmar’s maize grasps foreign market share, so it is necessary to raise the per acre yield of the crops.
  • In order to have success in agricultural tasks, sufficient supply of agricultural water is crucial. If cultivation can be done with the sufficient water, crops will thrive.
  • Farmlands near Ayeyawady River can be irrigated through river water pumping stations. In this regard, electric river water pumping stations can be operated. It can be seen that some rivers can be built at low head dams.

Afterwards, SAC member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister Admiral Tin Aung San, Union Ministers, and officials  presented reports on cultivation and production of crops in 2022-2023 Financial Year and projects for 2023-2024 Financial Year and efforts to promote agricultural capacity.

After hearing the reports, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister stressed the following points:

  • Land acreage extension is necessary for agricultural development. It is necessary to supervise the prevention of the loss of farmlands and the use of farmlands in other ways.
  • Rather than extended acreage, per acre high yield will produce more benefits. For cultivation capacity, it is necessary to grow two or three crops every year.
  • Responsible officials need to supervise to ensure for oil palm cultivation fully in the target acreage in Taninthayi Region.
  • Efforts are necessary for greater success in rubber cultivation, and value-added products should be manufactured.
  • It is necessary to preserve our country’s breeds such as Paw Sam Hmwe rice, we need to carry out research to increase the yield and improve the quality.
  • Maymyo flowers, dahlia flowers and other flowers that were produced in the country also need to be researched and maintained for development.
  • As those who carry out educational activities on farming businesses, it need to be able to educate people in terms that people can understand rather than writing and broadcasting in a scholarly manner.
  • If agricultural measures can be reformed, the State economy will skyrocket.

Then, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister and attendees viewed the displays of paddy, pulses and beans, maize, sunflower, edible crops, kitchen crops and honey produced by the Department of Agricultural Research (Yezin) at the exhibition hall.
