Statement Issued Regarding the Information on Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant

Of the eight Myanmar patients with XBB.1.16, one was a returnee from a foreign country and the remaining seven patients were local transmissions. The Ministry of Health is continuously taking the measures of “COVID-19 Molecular Disease Surveillance”, and releasing information on the detection of COVID-19 cases and SARS CoV-2 Omicron variants in real time.

Statement

1. The Ministry of Health is continuously conducting “COVID-19 Molecular Disease Surveillance”, and releasing information on the detection of COVID-19 cases and SARS CoV-2 Omicron variants from those who return from foreign countries as well as local confirmed cases in real time.

2. The 22 laboratory samples of COVID-19 virus of the positive cases were sent to the Department of Medical Research and the variant XBB.1.91 of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants were found in eight laboratory samples, XBB.1.16 in eight laboratory samples, XBB2.3 in two laboratory samples, XBB.1.9.2 in one sample, XBB.1.5 in one sample, XBB.1 in one sample and BA.2.75 in one sample on 29-4-2023. All the patients completed isolation since they tested positive for COVID-19, and are in good condition.

3. The XBB.1.16 (Arcturus) was first detected in India in January 2023 and is spreading in 37 world countries including Thailand and Bangladesh. Of the eight Myanmar patients with XBB.1.16, one was a returnee from a foreign country and the remaining seven patients were local transmissions. The currently detected variants XBB.1, XBB.1.5, XBB.1.9.1, XBB.1.9.2, XBB.2.3 and BA.2.75 are the variants already spreading in the world countries previously.

4. The ministry is stepping up the COVID-19 disease monitoring and control activities plus disease prevention, control and treatment activities.
