On the first day of Myanmar New Year 1385 ME after the end of 1384 ME, famous pagodas and stupas including Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon were crowded with people making good deeds while ceremonies of listening to religious sermons supervised by Buddhist monks were held at designated areas there on 17 April.
Similarly, pilgrims came in flocks to Maha Wizara Pagoda on Myanmar New Year Day and officials of General Administration Department and Maha Wizara Pagoda Board of Trustee members released 50,000 fish into the pond as the act of sparing or saving of life.
Ceremonies of Paritta recitation and listening to sermons also took place at Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye Pagoda, Botahtaung Pagoda, Sule Pagoda, Sacred Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon), Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda, Ngahtetgyi and Chaukhtetkyee pagodas on Myanmar New Year Day. Meanwhile, well-wishers and donors served refreshments to pilgrims.
On the occasion of Myanmar New Year Day, people made traditional manners, such as keeping the Sabbath, sparing of animal lives, recitation of Buddha sermons, gave the elderly a shampoo, cutting their nails, serving refreshments to the people and offering of provisions to monk. Doing such good Myanmar traditional culture and customs across the country are highly pleasurable sights in Myanmar. These good symbols are Myanmar traditional cultural heritage that deserve to be preserved by posterity.
