Measures Being Taken to Accept the Displaced Persons from Rakhine State

        The Immigration and Citizenship Verification Work Committee of the Central Committee on Rakhine State Stability, Peace and Development Committee held its 2/2023 meeting at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Immigration and Population in Nay Pyi Taw on 3 April.

        At the meeting, Union Minister U Myint Kyaing, Chairman of the Citizenship Verification Work Committee highlighted the points as follows:

  • The government is taking measures for the stability and development of Rakhine State by forming the Central Committee. Likewise, five working committees have also been formed and in action under the Central Committee to make the functions efficient.
  • The Immigration and Citizenship Verification Work Committee makes efforts to accept the displaced persons from Rakhine state who temporarily left their homes due to the terrorist incidents. Other working committees are organized under the Myanmar-Bangladesh bilateral agreements and both countries are coordinating through the committees.
  • It also verified the lists sent by Bangladesh until the end of February 2023 and made replies for over 87,000 persons in total via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the bilateral agreement, the repatriation processes are carried out under a pilot project and are estimated to accept over 700 persons.
  • The Bangladesh side again sent the lists of over 400 persons in addition to the estimated persons of over 700 through diplomatic channel. When the inspection team examined the additional list, it was found out that some persons met the five points of bilateral agreement and some others also were yet to be verified though bilateral coordination.
  • The officials of Taungpyo Letwae, Ngakhuya camps are doing preparations to accept refugees from Rakhine state in accordance with the repatriation process.
  • Members of the work committee reported that they are now taking necessary measures to accept those verified by the inspection team along with the previously-verified persons under Pilot Project.

         Members of the work committee explained and reported the combined efforts of relevant departments to implement the functions of the committee, and the findings of the inspection team and facts to be reviewed to accept the verified persons under Pilot Project. Then, the Union Minister made necessary comments and coordinated the discussion, it is reported.
