The Political Parties Registration Law was enacted on 26 January 2023 and political parties have been granted permissions to establish and register a political party within 60 days. In this regard, there rise queries whether the political parties can be registered after the targeted date. Regarding the queries, Major General Zaw Min Tun, leader of SAC Information Team answered as follows –
- Within 60 days from the date of promulgation of the Law, except for paying registration fees, political parties can apply for permission to establish and register a political party to the Union Election Commission as per the clauses under Section 5 of the Parties Registration Law, and by-laws. If no such application is made, the fact of being a political party shall be deemed to have been automatically invalidated.
- Regarding the political registration, although 60 days will end on 26 March, 25, 26 and 27 March are just holidays. Therefore, according to the Section 29 of Political Registration By-law, in case the final target date falls on holiday, the party registration process can proceed on coming first office day.
- If the parties existing under the Political Parties Registration Law which are desirous to continue as political parties under this Law would apply to the Commission within 60 days, the final target date is 28 March and it is as per prescribed law.
Regardless of the size, every political party has to proceed their registration as per prescribed laws and so will the Union Election Commission.
