Traffickers Smuggling Bengali People from Refugee Camp in Bangladesh to Malaysia Arrested in Yangon Region

According to the information about the arrival of smuggled Bengali people near a orchid garden on the way to Barlar village in Shwe Nantha village tract of Htaukkyant town in Mingaladon Township, a combined team comprising security personnel and administrative authorities went there to inspect the Bengali people at 4:50 pm on 8 December 2022. After the inspection, 6 male smuggled Bengali people including Mohammad Feiz Sein of 14 and 6 females from the refugee camp in Bangladesh were detained.

The detained Bengali people confessed as follows:

  • On 14 November, 36 Bengali people including themselves from Bangladesh refugee camp illegally entered with motorboat into a village in Rathedaung Township of Rakhine State.
  • They stayed together with another 36 Bengali people at the village for six days. A total of 72 Bengalis, along with four traffickers, set sail to work at Malaysia with a motorboat, and arrived at a village in the Ayeyawady Region via the mouth of the sea.
  • They disembarked from the boat, then walked along the path in the jungle and got in an oil tanker truck awaiting on the road.
  • They changed two other vehicles at a location on the illegal journey, arrived at a village in the Yangon Region, and stayed at a yard in the village for 15 days.
  • 60 Bengalis were taken by traffickers and 12 remaining Bengalis were arrested by the security personnel.

According to the detailed confession of the arrested Bengalis, the security force arrested a total of 12 perpetrators: the leader of illegal trafficking Thant Zin Oo (aka) Thurein, seven other traffickers who arranged transport with vehicles for illegal trafficking, four other partners in trafficking including Zaw Win (aka) Alibai who kept Bengalis at home and 19 other male Bengalis including Mohammad Jabel at the house of Zaw Win (aka) Alibai on 9 and 16 December 2022. Along with them, six vehicles including a white and blue-striped colored oil tanker truck were seized.

According to the arrested perpetrators’ confessions:

  • The perpetrators illegally arranged to send the Bengali people from the refugee camp in Bangladesh to Malaysia. In doing so, they brought the Bengali people at a location in Ayeyawady Region and temporarily kept them in Yangon Region. They received K700,000 per a Bengali for such illegal trafficking.
  • Other traffickers took the Bengali people, who were kept by their group, in separate batches and continued to send the them to Malaysia.
  • They had already made such trafficking for five times and smuggled 255 Bengali people so far.

12 perpetrators who were involved in illegal trafficking of 255 Bengali people were arrested. Along with them, one oil tanker truck, one Toyota Vanguard vehicle, one Toyota Crown vehicle, one Hyundai Starex vehicle and two Toyota Probox vehicles were seized. Necessary legal actions are being taken under the law against those illegal Bengali people and traffickers. It is reported that security force members are continuing their measures to arrest the remaining perpetrators who were involved in such trafficking.
