Vice-Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win, accompanied by Chief Minister of Yangon Region U Soe Thein, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, the Commander of Yangon Command and officials, met with the officials of Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Management Committee at the meeting hall of the Chairman Office of the Zone on 27 October.
At the meeting, the officials of the zone reported on the progress of the Thilawa SEZ and work undertakings, solving difficulties by the State and future plans. After replying to the necessary facts and responding to the reports, Vice-Chairman of the SAC delivered a speech as follows:
- Thilawa SEZ is partially implementing the objective of remedying the economy damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. Actions will be taken to ensure the speedy recovery of businesses from the impact of COVID-19 which is third point of the five-point roadmap of the State Administration Council.
- It is necessary to complete the implementation of Kyaukpyu and Dawei Special Economic Zones as quickly as possible to increase products and export goods for the State economy in accordance with the guidance of the Prime Minister.
- Moreover, it is necessary to build trust between investor countries and companies. The Central Bank of Myanmar has officially made clarifications over the statement of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
- Brochures must be distributed using languages in Russia, China and other regional countries in order to increase the inflow of FDI to the country.
- It is necessary to contact businesses from the SEZ with MSMEs with the purpose for increasing production in conformity with the original aim of SEZ and contribution to the development of State economy. It needs to discuss legal restrictions of the SEZ.
- Regarding the security measures, it is necessary to invite tender to security companies for implementing the security systems covering the whole zone.
- In producing value-added products based on fruits, region-wise groups and cooperative societies should be set up depending on the different periods of harvesting fruits in respective areas of the State. And, the awareness for growers must be raised on standard usage of pesticides on crops.
- SEZ contributes a great deal to the State economy as well as affects the GDP of the State.
- It is necessary to fulfill the needs of existing companies for their operations not to be halted. And, efforts must be made for attracting more companies to enter the zone.
Then, the Vice-Chairman of the SAC Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win and party viewed the products manufactured by Thilawa SEZ and the functions of the factory of Kubota Myanmar Co Ltd in the zone where they were conducted round by the officials. The Vice-Senior General asked what he wanted to know and coordinated necessary measures.
At present, a total of 114 companies from 21 countries operate their businesses at Thilawa SEZ with investments.
