First Coordination Meeting of Working Committee in Response to ILO’s Commission for Inquiry for Myanmar Held

The Working Committee in Response to ILO’s Commission for Inquiry for Myanmar held its first coordination meeting at the meeting hall of Ministry of Labour on 19 October. During the meeting, the chairman of the working committee the deputy minister for Labour highlighted as follows:

  • Myanmar formed a Commission of Inquiry to investigate whether they follow Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize Convention (ILO’s Convention No.87) and Forced Labour (ILO’s Convention No.29).
  • This meeting was held with an intention to collect the exact data from the relevant ministries and organizations in order to fight against the allegations of the ILO and effectively respond to the findings of the commission.
  • The ministry has already sent the objection letter regarding the organizing of Commission of Inquiry by ILO to the Director-General of ILO on 14 and 29 June. Moreover, the ministry strongly condemned to the decisions and concluding remarks adopted in the 110th Session of the International Labour Conference that were described in the State-owned media on 1 July.
  • The attendees from relevant departments were urged to add more suggestions on the draft in response to ILO regarding the decisions adopted in 344th Session of the ILO’s Governing Body, 345th Session of the ILO’s Governing Body, and the meeting of committee on application of standards which is the part of the 110th Session of the International Labour Conference.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of the working committee the deputy minister for Labour  U Win Shein, permanent-secretary, director-general of labour department and party.
