Kyaukpyu Power Plant Starts to Operate through China-Myanmar Electricity Sector Cooperation

The opening ceremony of the gas-fired combined cycle power station in Kyaukpyu township of Rakhine state was held on 9 September. At the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Chen Hai pointed out as follows:

  • China pledged to expand the cooperation work in Myanmar's basic infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing and financial sectors.
  • Kyaukpyu power plant was opened as a success of the bilateral cooperation in the power sector and the plant can support the economic and social development of the people in Rakhine state.
  • He expressed his desire to work with all sectors of Myanmar for implementing beneficial cooperation between China and Myanmar and jointly build a community with a bright future.

Deputy Minister for Electric Power Dr. Aung Zeya highlighted as follows:

  • The government implemented 135-MW Kyaukpyu Gas-fired Combined Cycle Power Station project that generates 1,000 million kW hours of power per year by using 22 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to meet the power needs of the state and the people of Rakhine state, which is geographically important.
  • The 230-MW Kyaukpyu sub-power station is an important power plant that can develop socio-economic life for the people of Rakhine state. Therefore, he expressed thanks to those who participated in the project.

Afterwards, Deputy Minister Dr. Aung Zeya, Rakhine state Natural Resources Minister U Than Tun, Chinese Ambassador Mr. Chen Hai, officials of Power China Resources Co Ltd and Kyauk Phyu Electric Power Co Ltd cut the ribbon to launch the power plant. Deputy Minister, state ministers and officials looked around and inspected power control room and the power generation and distribution of large-scale power generators, it is reported.
