Union Ministers Receive UNHCR’s Director of Asia Pacific Regional Bureau

Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing, and Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Thet Thet Khine received Mr. Indrika Ratwatte, Director of Asia Pacific Regional Bureau of the Office of The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at the respective ministries on 19 September.

  • During the meeting with the Union Minister for Border Affairs, both parties frankly exchanged views on the development, peace and stability of border areas in Myanmar, the steps being taken for the development of socioeconomic lives and human resources for ethnic people living in border areas, the preparations being done to readmit and resettle displaced persons from Rakhine state and the plans to be implemented in the future from the National-level committee on resettlement and closure of temporary camps.
  • During the meeting with the Union Minister for Immigration and Population, both sides cordially exchanged views on the implementation of MoU among the ministry, UNDP and UNHCR, the implementation of bilateral coordination for the repatriation of displaced persons in Bangladesh, the sabotages of armed terrorist groups targeting the efforts of the two countries to be destroyed, the requirement of UNHCR's constructive supports for the returnees to live in convenient life and sustaining living, the UNHCR's help for the understanding of international community on the current efforts of Myanmar and the cooperation for the success of repatriation process.
  • During the meeting with the Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, both parties frankly exchanged views on the UNHCR’s visits to the IDP camps during their trips to Rakhine and Shan states and their findings, the plans to sign the new MoU with the ministry, the procedures to be supported for the repatriation process and further cooperation procedures.

The meetings were attended by the Union Ministers together with directors-general, deputy directors-general and officials, it is reported.
