The prize awarding ceremony of presenting the rewards to the athletes of Myanmar universities who won medals at the 20th ASEAN University Games was held at the Ministry of Education in Nay Pyi Taw on 8 September. During the ceremony, Chairman of Education, Health and Human Resource Development CommitteeVice-Chairman of the SAC Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win stressed the following points:
- Sports manifest the fitness, perseverance, industry and unity of a country and race,that sports competitions are a show of prowess in a fair way.
- Likewise, sports can enthral the hearts of the citizens of a nation and uplift the national pride and prestige.Every competition reflects the unyielding spirit and long-lasting love for the country and race.
- Student-athletes gained success because they were determined to be successful in all kinds of sports as a national duty with an intention to burnish the image of the nation.
- In striving to keep abreast of other nationsin all spheres including sportssector, the government is taking systematic plans for the national sports standard to meet the international level.
- Development in sports will lead to educational development, in addition to, the development in educational sector to the development of the nation. Therefore, the sports sector will be enhanced together with the education to emerge brilliant, disciplined and fit persons.
- The Ministry of Education is upgrading sports facilities at schools to develop Five powers and promote sports sector, as well as, implementing the opportunities to learn education and sports together.
- The 20th event held in Thailand included 23 kinds of sports and games. But with the COVID-19 pandemic, Myanmar could participate in only four contests such as football, sepaktakraw, Wushu and archery. There were only 33 student participants in the games.
- In the games, Myanmar student athletes secured two gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals with their skills and techniques, high performance and standards.
- Before they go to participate in the games, Prime Minister provided K200,000 and US$200 each to athletes and K100,000 and US$100 each to coaches.
- In this ceremony, gold medalists will be honoured with K7.5 million each in the singles event, silver medalists K5 million each and bronze medalists K2.5 million each. K1 million each will be awarded to players from the football team which secured the bronze medal.
- Coaches and managers will be honoured with K2 million each for the gold medal, K1.5 million each for silver and K1 million for bronze.Hence, K55.5 million as the reward will be presented to the winners at the ceremony.
Afterwards, on behalf of the winners, gold medalist Ma Aye Thitsar Myint of Wushu event who took national pride spoke words of thanks, and the ceremony is closed. Also present were SAC members General Mya Tun Oo and Daw Aye Nu Sein, Union ministers, Union Civil Service Board chairman, Nay Pyi Taw Council chairman, student athletes who took national pride and their coaches and officials.
