UEC Chair Says Preparations are underway to Successfully Hold Election

        The closing ceremony of the on-job training (5/2022) for capacity building of the deputy staff officers who will serve at the Union Election Commission (UEC) and various levels of sub-commission offices was held at the Sinphyushin hall of the Interrogation and Accommodation Centre (Ywa Taw) in Nay Pyi Taw on 5September. During the ceremony, the Chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) U Thein Soe stressed the following points:

  • The UEC has already explained about the findings of voting frauds in 2020 general election to the public and international diplomats to Myanmar.
  • In carrying out to take actions against those persons participated inthe 2020 electoral processes, voting frauds and malpractices, and those persons who voted twice, a total of 1,732 cases have been convicted so far.
  • The combined inspection teams consisting of representatives of the relevant departments led by the members of the UEC has already inspected 85 out of 92 political parties up to 5 September.
  • The UEC initiated the pilot project to verify the ground population census for the accuracy of the basic voter lists across the nation, and is updating the voter lists monthly which are required to modify and annul, in collaboration with General Administration Department and Immigration Department.
  • In reviewing the parliamentary elections and multiparty democracy general elections held in Myanmar after gaining independence in 1948, it can be seen that the aforesaid elections adopted Fast-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system.
  • As adopting this system led to occur one-party ruling system and dissolve one’s vote for the candidates of the elections, plans to adopt the Proportional Representation System (PR) that will solve those weak points were discussed with current existing parties.
  • In doing so, 71 political parties participated in the discussion and they had the agreements to adopt PR system, and Close List PR system in the upcoming elections for the voters to vote in simple ways.
  • The UEC carried out the amendments to the existing relevant Hluttaw elections laws and by-laws, and political party registration law and by-laws in order to comply with PR system, and is carrying out the plans to enact the laws as procedures.
  • The trainees are urged to follow the Civil Service Personnel Law and also strive to be the disciplined and good staffwho are able to serve the assigned tasks as dutiful ones. 

        The UEC is carrying out necessary preparations in order to successfully hold the election and members of the UEC and trainees attended the event.
