Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Attends ASEAN Economic Ministers' Special Meeting

 

Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations U Aung Naing Oo participated in the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Special Meeting, which was held on 17 and 18 May 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.

During the meeting, Union Minister discussed the following points:

  • The government is striving to address the impacts of global economic stagnation on the country due to the unprecedented global challenges.
  • The government of Myanmar is striving to overcome the challenges and making preparations to hold general election in 2023 in line with Constitution Law.
  • The support and understanding of ASEAN Member States are the crucial roles to stabilize political and economic situations in Myanmar, and urged to support Myanmar by understanding the country’s political situation.
  • The government is actively participating in the regional economic integration programme under the ASEAN Economic Community Pillar, the Union Minister discussed.

During the Meeting, the Union Minister had the separate meetings with Chairman of the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting, Minister for Commerce, the Kingdom of Cambodia, Minister for Trade of Indonesia, Deputy Minister for Commerce of Thailand, and Deputy Minister for Industry and Commerce of Lao PDR, and discussed with them as follows:

  • During the meeting with Minister for Commerce, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the both sides cordially exchanged views on the matters relating to the further processes of Myanmar under the ASEAN Economic Community Pillar, the enhancement of bilateral economic cooperation, the finalization of the Investment Promotion and Protection Treaty, and the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement between Myanmar and Cambodia.
  • During the meeting with Minister for Trade of Indonesia, they cordially exchanged views on the liberalization of Indonesia’s current export ban on palm oil, particularly exemption for Myanmar and the enhancement of Myanmar agricultural exports to the Indonesian market.
  • During the meetings with Deputy Ministers in Thailand and Lao PDR, they frankly discussed matters to enhance bilateral trade and also to facilitate the Baht/Kyat direct payment at the Thai-Myanmar border.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister together the with permanent secretary of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and officials.
