Cambodia Holds 19th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Meeting (ACDFM-19)

The 19th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Meeting (ACDFM-19) hosted by Cambodia was held in the meeting hall of Ministry of National Defence in Phnom Penh on 17 March. The meeting was attended by Chief of the General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) General Maung Maung Aye, Chief of Staff (Army) and Chief of Military Security Affairs as well as Chiefs of Defence Forces, officials and delegations of ASEAN countries. 

The military leaders of ASEAN countries then discussed alphabetically the topic of “Solidarity for Harmonized Security”. During the meeting, General Maung Maung Aye, Chief of the General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) talked about the following points:

  • The important role of the security sector to ensure the sustainable development of three pillars such as economic, political and social sectors under the name of ASEAN.
  • The powerful countries urged interference in domestic affairs of other countries directly or indirectly that go beyond the non-interference principle of ASEAN.
  • The ASEAN member countries should work together in a united and harmonized manner for the current hardships and coming challenges by respecting the sovereignty and equality of other countries.
  • The political changes of Myanmar, declaration of State of Emergency due to voting frauds of 2020 multiparty general election, formation of the State Administration Council with military representatives and civilians and undertakings under the five-point roadmap and nine objectives of the SAC.
  • Destructive acts of terrorist groups NUG, CRPH and PDF connecting with internal and external terrorists that leads to the course of utter devastation in Myanmar.
  • Important situations to hold successfully a free and fair multiparty general election within the fixed period for implementing the genuine and disciplined multiparty democratic system and building the Union based on democracy and federalism.
  • As the destructive elements of terrorist groups affect the State’s stability and security which are certainly needed for holding the multiparty general election, efforts are being made to hold the multiparty general election within the fixed period and to ensure peace and stability of the State including law enforcement actions.

Afterwards, the leaders approved the Two-Year Activity Working Plan (2022-2024), finalized the Joint Statement of ACDFM-19 and signed in the Joint Statement. Then, the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, the Chair of ACDFM-19 made a concluding remark and transferred the chairmanship and flag of ACDFM to the leader of Indonesian delegation who will take the alternate Chair of ACDFM -20.

It is reported that the Chief of General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) General Maung Maung Aye, then, attended the gala dinner hosted by Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
