Detection of Omicron Cases in Myanmar

When laboratory samples of COVID-19 virus of the returnees who return by Relief Flights from abroad, other samples of local clusters of COVID-19 virus and suspected patients were sent to the National Health Laboratory on 28 January 2022, 72 cases of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant were detected.

Until 30 January 2022, there are a total of 283 SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant cases: 209 cases were detected from returnees from abroad and 74 cases were detected from people infected locally.

The 209 Omicron cases are 193 Myanmar nationals and 16 foreigners-35 returned from the UAE, 44 returned from Malaysia, 77 returned from India, 17 from Thailand, 18 from Philippines, eight from Singapore, two from Russia, seven from Korea and one from Japan by Relief Flights. There are 74 Omicron cases of local infection including 48 residents from Tamu township, 20 from Kalay township, three persons who are the secondary contacts of the people from these townships, one from suspected COVID-19 patients and other two who are the family members contacting with the infected persons who returned from abroad.
