Information Release on Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Variant Omicron Virus

Among the laboratory samples of the COVID-19 infected people returning from foreign countries through Relief Flights, laboratory samples suspected to be Omicron were sent to the National Health Laboratory on 24 January 2022 and the SARS-CoV-2 Variant Omicron was found in 37 laboratory samples.

The 37 Omicron cases are 36 Myanmar nationals and one foreigner: six returned from India; seven from Malaysia; four from Korea; one from Thailand; 15 from the UAE; one from Russia and three from Singapore by relief flights.

It is reported that the figure of Omicron cases has risen to 183 in total in Myanmar up to 24 January 2022. The 181 Omicron cases are those who returned from abroad and other two are the family members contacting with the infected persons.
