Myanmar-China Trade Operation Resume Following Reopening of Lwegel-Lai Yin Border Trade Post Shut Down for Six Months amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

Sino-Myanmar trade operation resumed following the border trade post in Lwegel township of Bhamo district in Kachin state reopened on 17 January 2022, which had been shut down for six months since mid-July 2021 amidst the COVID-19 impacts.

In the bilateral trade, Myanmar will export sugarcane and tissue banana to China during a trial period, whereas agricultural inputs, textile and consumer goods are going to be imported into the country from China. Concurrently, trucks blocked in two countries are going to be given the go-ahead in the same numbers to operate the trade.

Under the agreement between the two countries, it is reported that only truck drivers, assistants and dockers, who have already received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, are being permitted to operate.
