Information Release on Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Variant Omicron Virus

Among the laboratory samples of the COVID-19 infected people returning from foreign countries through Relief Flights, laboratory samples suspected to be Omicron were sent to the National Health Laboratory on 17 January 2022 and the SARS-CoV-2 Variant Omicron viruses were found in 42 laboratory samples.

The 42 Omicron cases are 36 Myanmar nationals and six foreigners: 21 returned from India; 12 returned from Malaysia; four returned from Philippines; three returned from Thailand; one from the UAE; and one from Singapore by relief flights.

It is reported that the figure of Omicron cases has risen to 118 in total in Myanmar up to 17 January 2022. The 116 Omicron cases are those who returned from abroad and other two are the family members contacting with the infected persons.
