Fisheries Sector Generates Annual Revenue of K6 Billion and a Daily Income of US$ 2 million

A coordination meeting on the development of the fisheries sector was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation on 22 December.

During the meeting, the Union Minister U Tin Htut Oo said that:

· The sector contributed to 4.7 percent of GDP in the 2019-2020 financial year     according to 2019-2020 financial year.

· As Myanmar received annual revenue of K6 billion and foreign income of over US$786 million generated by the fisheries export in the 2020-2021 financial year, which indicated a daily average income of US$2 million generated by this sector.

· As the Fisheries Department is striving for importation of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia-GIFT (Tilapia) species and distribution to the hatcheries, potential freshwater fish hatchery on a trial run and improving hatch rate and growth rate, the department has successfully contributed to domestic fish security and export promotion through commercially hatching and producing of 21 fish species at the hatcheries.

· The fisheries sector is playing a vital role for food security, nutrition and job creation and income of people of different class.

The Deputy Minister, the Director-general of Fisheries Department, the respective heads of the fisheries departments in the regions and states also attended the meeting.
