Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing Meets District- and Township-level Depertmental Officials and MSME Businesspersons in Meiktila District

Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing met the district- and township-level departmental officials and businesspersons of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) at the Kandaw Mingala Hall in Meiktila on 10 January, to discuss about regional and economic development measures.

Also present at the meeting along with the SAC Chairman Prime Minister were SAC Joint-Secretary General Ye Win Oo, Union Ministers, the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, the Central Command Commander, district- and township-level departmental staff and MSME businesspersons in Meiktila District.

First, the MSME businesspersons at the meeting reported on the following matters:

  • The implementation of their businesses, market shares and difficulties;
  • Benefits in the generation of electricity through solar energy which is the requirement for businesses, and request to the government for ensuring broader adoption of solar energy;
  • Desire for additional support to achieve more progress of oil mills; and
  • Measures taken to develop cotton cultivation and boost cotton-related industries and the requirements of the regional development.

After hearing the reports, the Senior General discussed about MSME development measures as follows:

  • The development of a region primarily depends on the efforts of administative authorities and local residents. Therefore, all stakeholders are urged to continue their collective endeavors to ensure sustainable regional development.
  • In the agricultural industry, the given goals and objectives are calculated based on actual output. There is a difference in the yields depending on the seeds, types of soil, water and methods, so it must be considered that the target of crop production is not being met.
  • Due to the poor quality of agricultural land in the Meiktila District, resulting in low yields, it is necessary to find methods such as increasing the required inputs, planting green manures, incoporating natural soil preperation, and implementing land improvement techniques to enhance soil quality and improve productivity.
  • The government has been encouraging the use of renewable energy for the electricity requirements.
  • As Meiktila is a region with few rainy days, it will be possible to successfully extract and use electricity from solar energy. As there are projects carried out by the State, entrepreneurs can also carry out solar projects according to their business requirements.
  • Regarding the supply of electricity and its capacity, there are challenges due to the destruction caused by terrorists, the inability of some power plants to operate at full capacity, and issues arising from insufficient natural gas supply. In addition, there are objections to the implementation of hydropower projects implemented by the State.
  • If the regional meat production is to be improved more than now, it will become the central hub for meat production within the country.
  • By successfully carrying out livestock breeding businesses, leather-related industries can also be implemented successfully. Products made from leather, such as clothing, bags, shoes, and other accessories, are marketable goods. Therefore, ensuring the success of livestock breeding can also lead to the success of other related industries.
  • Since onion and chillis are demanded by local and foreign markets, the local economy will develop if it can be cultivated and sold throughout the year as well as exporting and selling these crops abroad will help the country’s economic development a lot.
  • As the arrival of many tourists can significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the local community, Green Zone Areas must be implemented in Meiktila District without fail and perennial trees must be systematically conserved.

Later, the Senior General interestingly viewed round the displays of domestic products, foodstuffs, personal goods, clothes and cotton products, and then asked about the marketable situations of these products which were explanied by the businessespersons  acoording to their related businesses.
