A Ceremony marking World Tourism Day 2024 observed at the Myanmar International Convention Centre-II (MICC-II) in Nay Pyi Taw on 27 September, with the attendance of Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Council Joint-Secretary and SAC members, union ministers, the Nay Pyi Taw Council chair, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and officials, and award winners of World Tourism Day 2024 commemorative contests.
First, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister delivered opening remarks as follows:
- World Tourism Day is celebrated with its respective theme annually, and Tbilisi, Georgia is the host country of this year’s event with the theme of “Tourism and Peace”.
- Tourism is one of the largest service industries of the world which can generate a lot of job opportunities.
- According to statistics, 1.5 billion tourists traveled around the world in 2019, earning USD 1.8 trillion before the outbreaks of COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism supports 10.3 percent of the global GDP and 330 million jobs.
- As everybody knows, Myanmar possesses a large array of resources for tourism business and is a home to diverse cultures and over 100 ethnic races.
- Myanmar, strategically located in the Southeast Asian region, is blessed with virgin beaches, high mountain ranges, archipelagos and fertile plains.
- Moreover, wonderfully natural beauties, ancient cultural heritage and traditions and lifestyles of national races are attractive to international tourists.
- More than one million international travellers visited Myanmar in 2023. As the number of travellers in the first five months of 2024 amounted to more than 500,000, it is expected to increase the number of international travellers this year more than the previous year’s.
- The government emphasizes boosting the tourism industry with efforts to surge the State economy.
- The most fundamental and vital prerequisite for the development of a country is peace and stability. As such, the State Administration Council is giving priority to pragmatic and potential measures in the peace process.
- In doing so, if leaders of national races keenly participate in regional development by joining hands with the government, regions of national races will develop speedily.
- All tourism entrepreneurs are urged to cooperate with the government in initiating a peace process to ensure the long-term development of Myanmar’s tourism industry in line with the 2024 theme: “Tourism and Peace”.
After that, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister presented prizes to the winning students in the tourism promotion short video contest and coloured photo contest to mark World Tourism Day, winners in the article as well as impromptu talk contests and essay contest in commemoration of World Tourism Day. Following this, they posed for a commemorative photo.
Later, the SAC Chairman Prime Minister and attendees visited the exhibitions to mark the 2024 World Tourism Day.
